Tears On The Dancefloor - Steps

Steps are a name synonymous with the late 90's and nothing else - and yet here we are with the brand new album, Tears On The Dancefloor! Our intrigue is very much piqued! Lead single Scared of the Dark gave us a taste of what we can expect to come; cheesy dance-pop that is catchy and upbeat. A guilty pleasure for many, let's see what Steps have to offer nearly 20 years down the line from their 90's success.

Here is our expert rating system!

Conclusion

John - The only positive about this was the lead single, Scared of the Dark. A catchy, well-written pop song. However... The rest of the album just blended into one hell of a load of bad pop music. Bland for the most part lyrically and vocally, but I thought the instrumentals would at least redeem Steps somewhat here. They didn't. There were some exceptions, Firefly being one of the rarities. But I certainly won't be listening to anything other than Scared of the Dark again. Having said all of this, I do think Steps are wasted. They are usually good at what they do, and there is one place that what they do would be perfect for: Eurovision. Someone needs to organise this. Eurovision or not though, this album is a drag with few redeeming features.

Overall Score - 1.5/5

Tilly - I think that Steps are in a very difficult position as a group because if they branched out and tried to conform to today's music, they'd probably just be nobodies, so they obviously opted to re-adopt their old sound to try and appeal to their old fanbase, which I think Tears On The Dancefloor very much did. It's camp, it's upbeat, it's pure 90's with a slightly more modern selection of instrumentals, but it's still very much the same Steps. To me however, it does feel dated, it doesn't feel as fun as it thinks it is, and I have no desire to re-listen to any song on this album ever again.

Overall Score - 1.5/5

Something To Tell You - HAIM

Our apologies for the massive delay in posting a new review but we're back! We've been in the process of moving home for the last month or so and unfortunately haven't had the time to listen to new music. However, we have an extensive list of upcoming releases that we're excited to get to, as well as albums that were released during our brief departure, so without waiting any longer, here is our review of indie pop/rock trio Haim's latest release Something To Tell You.  Since we've been away for ages - and it's just what we do! - here's a refresher of our ratings system.  1 - Shouldn't have been recorded 2 - Filler 3 - Above average 4 - Killer 5 - Career defining masterpiece Track 01 - Want You Back John - 4/5 Tilly - 4/5 Track 02 - Nothing's Wrong John - 3/5 Tilly - 3.5/5 Track 03 - Little Of Your Love John - 3.5/5 Tilly - 3.5/5 Track 04 - Ready For You John - 3/5 Tilly - 3

Contact - Pharmakon

And here is the long awaited unusual review we've been teasing you about all day! I can already tell you, although I'm sure you'll have already guessed by the album cover, this is not an album for the faint hearted. Contact is a grotesque take on the transcendence of our physical bodies. Known for her unique live performances, Margaret Chardiet is the woman behind Pharmakon, and this album marks the ten year anniversary of the project. The cover has already made us incredibly uncomfortable, and that's before we've even begun to listen to the 'death industrial' music held within. But sometimes the most incredible things are those that evoke a powerful emotion, so we're definitely going into this with an open mind! Let's get right down to it! Our wonderfully superb ratings system awaits you below! 1 - Shouldn't have been recorded 2 - Filler 3 - Above average filler 4 - Killer 5 - Career defining masterpiece Track 01 - Nake

Last Young Renegade - All Time Low

All Time Low are one of the biggest and most well known rock bands around at the moment. Back with their seventh studio album, Last Young Renegade, they are the subject of our latest review! The band from Baltimore, MA have long been at the forefront of pop-rock, along with the likes of Paramore, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At The Disco - although out of those, All Time Low have definitely been the most consistent with their sound. Pairing catchy choruses with well-written and at times satirical lyrics, along with instrumentals that you'll be humming along to for days, is what these guys do best. But is their well-worn recipe still fresh? Find out here, as we review their latest efforts.
